Its a different setup all over Canada.
Here in Calgary:
Age 4=Beginner
5-6 = Tyke
7-8 = Novice
9-10 = Atom
11-12 = Peewee*
13-14 = Bantam*
14-15 = Midget*
16-17 = Junior*
*These levels are hit-hockey
Players are ranked according to skill and placed on a team
1=best
There will be as many teams in each community as there are players wanting to play. Coaches are usually parents, but in higher levels, 'off-the-street' coaches will come in.
From bantam and up, AA and AAA teams will be formed. About 4 or 5 communities will make up each team, and they play all over the city and surrounding area.

Define Minor League. The CHL(Canadian Hockey League) isn't a minor league. It is a underage league basically. The AHL is the minor league. Now if you want to see future stars then watching the CHL isn't bad. Just don't try to find the CHL standings, as it itself is 3 leagues. The OHL(Ontario Hockey League), the QJMHL(Quebec Junior Major Hockey League) and sorry can't remember the other league. Anyway they all are their own leagues. They all have their own Championships. Then the three Championships and a host city play for the Memorial Cup. Anyway as to the host it is rotated as a team from the one league each year is chosen as host. There are rules as to who gets to bid and all that. That is getting more complicated then needed though. If the host city is also the winner of their league then the league runner up gets to go as well.

there are 3 leagues that are canadian, the dub, the Q and the O. they are major junior teams. than each providence has there own minor junior leagues with 3 tiers (A,B,C). players in major juniors are pretty freakin good and a lot end up playing in the nhl. also if one plays in a major junior league they cant play in the NCAA. players minor juniors arent very good, and no one that is lower than A has a chance of doing anything hockey wise in their life. the one advantage to playing minor juniors is you can still play in the NCAA. the minor leagues are the AHL, ECHL, CHL and UHL, in order of best league to worest. The usa has a junior system also and in all of its leagues (the USHL (junior A tier 1), the NAHL (junior A tier 2 but usually just called junior A), and than a few different junior B and C leagues). the NCAA might as well be a farm league because many teams have their draft picks play in college until the player is ready for the NHL.
