Shouldn't there be a rule or fine on coaches who run up scores in sports events like when A&M scored 101 points on Gramblings 29 earlier in the season? It seems like extreme poor sportsmanship.

Here's the problem with that as I see it. First, it is obvious Texas A&M should not play Grambling, but you throw Grambling or a school like that a lot of $$$$$ to boost A&M's win total and volia!- they all do it so no offense against the Aggies. Anyway, A&M's second and third strings are probably better than Grambling's first string, plus a lot of those bench kids see this as their only chance to play and score in a game, and you have scores like 101-29. I am sure the A&M coach would rather not win 101-29 because a Grambling might not answer the phone next August when A&M needs to fill their schedule with another cupcake.

This is D-I basketball. You know it's a competitive venture. On it's face, running up the score may seem bad, but it is also possible that the third-stringers of a bigger school are better than the starters of another.
I didn't see the game you're talking about.
However, if the winners are using their starters in the second half of a game like that, they are prone to get their star players injured or tired. They will need those players ready for the Big XII slate. They will suffer down the road, if starters are in late in a blowout.
But in your example, it is Grambling State's job to stop A&M, not the Aggies'.

No, rub it in their faces. It is a sport and if the other team just cant hang with you then you tell them that in the harshest way possible, killing them. I think rules that prevent teams from running up the score are awful for the game. If you dont want to be beaten real badly, then you should get better. Thats just my opinion.

NO way. Running up the score on someone is not something you often get to do in D-1 basketball. So when you get the opportunity to play a team who hasn't worked as hard as you have, it isn't your fault when you kill them. Why should you be penalized for another teams lack of effort?

It is unpopular. You want to win, that's fine. There is no need to humiliate the other team. Poor sportsmanship isn't something that only the losers can do.

Quite the opposite

A team not playing to the best of their ability should be chastised and scorned.

If I was playing on a sucky team and we were getting hammered by the superior team I would feel insulted if they let up due to pity.

Also, no lead is insurmountable.
