no such thing as best av
also check periodically for rootkits with blacklight by fsecure
work on lots of machines f'd up by norton
personally leave av off -only scan downloaded files but keep windows upto date and goto

AVG Antivirus. Its not only free, it found viruses on my computer that McAfee and Norton couldn't find. I've used AVG for 4 years and haven't had a virus problem since then.

In independent testing of AV programs Kaspersky was found to be the best AV program. This website has the results of the testing.

Everyone is going to say something diferent from personal experance.
here are several sites that compare results of each scanner.
i personally like Kaspersky too even if its geared towards the advanced user.
