before they used horses to get messages from here to there across ong distances. I wonder how long it took for a message to get from A to B which is say 500 km away

Post horses were generally used for about 25 miles before being swapped, but Dick turpin got from London to York (about 200 miles).

That story is ACTUALLY based on fact, though it wasn't Dick, but another highwayman.
