That is a really toughie to answer as each aftershave smells different on different men but as a GENERAL rule of thumb- the more expensive and SUBTLE smelling, the better!
Overpowering tends to be a "scent note" of the cheaper stuff but some expensive scents smell "cheap" so beware!
And then there is the matter of horses for courses- there is a time and place for each scent and what suits at work does not suit at play or vice versa.
Personally? I believe you cannot go wrong with Karl Lagerfeld' signature scent Lagerfeld for its powdery cleanness, Polo by Ralph Lauren for its sporty bite, and Il (spelled iL) by Emporio Armani for its sheer sex appeal.
Tabac, Old Spice and even Brut in SMALL doses are reasonably palatable but I am a bit of a scent snob- I prefer a more subtle one. Dune for men being along the lines of Lagerfeld there... And less is more- DON'T slosh it on!

the oils in a persons skin makes every aftershave smell different it`s down to taste.

By far the nicest, because it has a clean, subtle, expensive scent is Elite by Floris. Combined with the shower gel and shampoo it is truly irrestistable.

OK sounds really chavvy but i smelled this one on a lecturer and was shocked to the core when he said what it was, Burberry London, really clean and fresh smelling.
Other fave is Chanel Allure very sexy.
