I started my first fish tank three weeks ago. Two days after we brought home fish, we had fry. We saved two of them. All of the fish appear to be doing well. (What do I know though, really?) Suddenly, last night, the black mollie was bent into a U-shape on the bottom of the tank. No more black mollie. The other fish appear to be still doing alright, even the fry (which I wasn't sure I'd be able to raise!). Anybody have an idea what happened to Blackie?

The tank cycled for a week before we added fish. I did lots of online research about how to start our aquarium and did everything according to the instructions (which I read from every piece of equipment and every "put this in the tank" thing we bought). The other fish all seem to be doing fine. My plan had been to change water every two weeks. I did a water change after two weeks. I did another after I removed the dead fish (a week later). Is the bent body normal? I sort of thought fish floated upside down when they died.

If he died from shock, shock of what? I thought we did everything right! The other fish are all doing well.

fishes life reduces by 25% being away from its natural habitat moreover if you buy it from cheap shops their upkeeping is quite unhigenic so noone knows what desease they are suffering from so dont feel sad get another one from a good shop witha certified age

how big is your fish tank? did you add fish straight away? in which case it would be ammonia poisioning that killed him as you didn't cycle the tank.

invest in a water test kit (API Master Test Kit is a good one) and post back with the readings.

what it SHOULD say is ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate around 25ppm, if nitrate is over 50ppm thats lethal levels too.

how often are you doing water changes?

i've posted links to two things below, the first is a guide to fishless cycling which is how a tank SHOULD have been prepared before adding fish. The second is guide to cycling after you've bought fish too soon.
