Rights......

To be treated with dignity, no matter the situation.
To be able to reach for the stars, instead of settling for what someone else wants for you.
To be allowed to speak your mind, even if it means that someone will disagree with you.

Priviledges......

To be allowed on the red carpet during important functions.
To get away with doing wrong, simply because of who you know.
To make someone else take the blame for something you did, even though everyone knows the truth.

A right is something that cannot be taken away. The Constitution provides us "inalienable" rights such as freedom, etc. Other rights are right to dissent, marry, vote, etc.

A privilege is something that can be given or taken away. Examples are: if you get all "A's" on your report card your curfew will be extended one hour. A curfew is a privilege. Earning an allowance is a privilege. Being able to have your friends overnight is a privilege. All these can be taken away.

Here's an easy reminder of the difference:

The ability to wear spandex is a privilege, not a right.

when you have a right, you are allowed to do whatever. everyone has rights and is nothing special.

however, not everyone has privileges. Someone with privileges are allowed to do something that someone with rights cannot.

A privilege is bestowed upon the recipient. A right is inherent.

a Right - example when a police officer tells you that "You have the right to remain silent - you have the right to an attorney"
This means that you cannot be forced to talk, and you cannot be forced to not have an attorney

a Priviledge - In Canada it's a priviledge to hold a license. So if i go and drink alcohol and drive.. Then the cops can take away my license (revoke my priviledge to drive) until i demonstrate that I will not drink and drive anymore.

Rights would be like.. you have a right to free speech, it is something you are allowed by law.. where a privilege is something you earn like driving, or watching TV..

Right is what's owed to you because it is just. Privilege is what is given to you and you don't necessarily deserve.
