I want to change the knobs on my bedroom door, but I can't get the old knob off. There are no screws on either side that I can unscrew. The only thing I managed to unscrew and remove is the latch on the side (where the protruding thing that locks into the doorframe is), but that hasn't helped at all. How can I get this doorknob off?

Ok, I pushed the tab with a flat screwdriver and pulled it and it came off. So the grasping part of the knob is off, but the part that is right against the door is still stuck fast. Btw, I can't use a hammer or do anything that would damage the door because I don't want to potentially lose my security deposit. Thanks for all the helpful answers so far.

I have added a picture of my (possibly broken) doorknob in its current state. [http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b281/teresis_pieces/doorknob.jpg] As you can see, still no visible screws, and I have damaged the wood on my door by attemting to pry the knob off. Any further help greatly appreciated.

On what would be considered the inside of the door there should either be a tab about 1/4" long on the side of the shaft , a small hole just larger than paper clip diameter on the shaft or a little metal clip on the plate that rests against the door. Any one of these hides the key to getting the knob off. Depress which ever one you have and the knob or plate should pull off revealing the screws that hold the lockset to the door. If the handle is what comes off, you may need to unscrew the plate against the door to reveal the screws. From there it is unmistakable how it comes apart. Remove the screws and everything falls apart.

Good Luck!

You have the knob off already, sometimes the trim ring against the door is threaded or just snaps onto the inner materials. Try using a smallscrew driver( like an eyeglass repair kit) and place it between the door and the trim piece. Very gently wiggle the screw driver to see if the trim loosens. Some trims need this done at multiple locations. If the trim is threaded ( not normal for interior door knobs) Use a pair of channel lock pliers to loosen the trim. If you are worried about scratching the door paint, tape the area with blue masking tape before using the channel locks.

Look at the shaft between the two knobs. Modern door knobs require a larger hole than some of the older door knobs, you might wind up having to drill a hole in your door to put in a new knob. If it's the case, then you don't need to be as gentle about getting the old knob off.

Look for a slot under the knob, near where it meets the round shaft part. Sometimes there is a tab in there that you need to press with a screwdriver to pull the knob off.

it should come off the same way, or maybe there is some paint that is sticking to the knob, try and give it a nice hit with a plastic mallet.
