India has what is known as a developing economy and the manufacturers will sell the most units if more people can afford them , also with the strict class/caste system there many people will be accused of being pretentious just by having a car much less a luxury unit., the wealthy will always get what they want , and the intelligent will find a way to profit from a situation , why not start a shop that puts upgrades into these bottom line cars ?

Most of the cars today share a same platform. Take for example the new zen. It shares its engine, suspension with the wagon r. It also has the underpinnings of the alto. And also the best example is the esteems proven 1.3 litre motor. It cuts cost to a great extent. And also now they are offering ABS for the hatchbacks. Like that someday, indian cars will become luxurious.

Simply because its more profitable for them to do so. The majority of the Indian population can't afford luxury cars. Thats why car companies target them with their products. Producing luxury cars would be very expensive for Indian companies and they wouldn't be able to compete with luxury car makers neither in price nor in quality. If you were rich why would you buy an Indian luxury car when you can get a better and maybe even cheaper foreign luxury car?
