I don't understand why people call themselves black...or white. Can someone explain it to me?

I have never seen a black person or a white person, but I've heard many people call themselves black/white. When really the just have dark brown or light brown skin. And sometimes people get very angry about it.

Is it possible that these labels are part of the problem? White and black are oppsites. Can we ever be united if we label ourselves as polar oppsites?

Why don't you want to be "unified"?

I'm not suggesting that you have to change who you are or want you like...it's good that either one is differant. Unified to me is not judging a person based on a critirea that doesn't make sense

The only reason why I use "black and white" is because that is the labels that most people use. Also, during the time when "white people" first saw "black people" they thought that our dark skins were sign of impurity as oppose to their light skins which were signs of purity. (black-evil; white-pure and good) I think another reason why were called black is because even though there a lot of people of different races that are brown or whatever, to them we seem black. As far as the labels goes, we won't ever get pass them. We can all look the same, but in the end we will find some reason to hate each other. This is the truth and perhaps only truth of human nature.

You bring up a good point. I've never understood the rationale behind that, either. Hell, I'm tannish-pale with a tinge of red on the margins, but that's almost as bad as someone saying they're African-American; I still think we should go by first names, or last names to be formal. Still, some people like to classify; after all, we name species to separate them. But I think we should address people as individuals, since we deal with individuals more often than groups, despite their spokespersons' claims...

I understand where your coming from, but apparently those were the labels given to us. I'd like all of us to be called American, some don't see it that way though.

hey, I'm proud of who I am and the label that comes with it. Just because some are unhappy with what they are doesn't mean we should ajust to make them feel secure. I'm a West European heterosexual male. Nice to meet you!

They are just words used to distinguish who you are talking about. Anyone who gets upset over these kind of things are just showing their immaturity and lack of education.

how about ignoring our eye color, hair color, etc as well?

so when a cop looks for a suspect they will put in their profile, "that human guy with the darker skin?"

stop ignoring that we are different races. suck it up and be proud of your race.

Good question. That may be a subliminal reason for our social problems today.
