Perhaps you're thinking of "Phantom" by Susan Kay. It's told from the perspective of several narrators, the first of which is the Phantom's mother. It's some of the best Phantom-related writing out there.

i never knew there were any phantom books besides the original one until now. i found this one, which is supposed to be a prequel.
