Doctor Who. Many heroes would die to save the world, some just to save one person. Doctor Who has died 9 times while saving people, often people on a different planet who he had never met before.
The Doctor is a great hero. More than that a few years back I my life was a wreck and I spent some weeks considering suicide, then I heard there would be a new series of Doctor Who in a few months so I decided I wanted to see the first episode of it before I killed myself. It was my favourite show as a kid and I wanted to see what happened in it before I died. Over the months I waited life got better and better and eventually I did not want to kill myself. The Doctor in a very real way saved me. Even a fictional hero can save lives.

Monkeyman's answer has got to be the best, but for for me the greatest fictional hero is Optimus Prime from Transformers. I read the TF comics as a kid, and am now reading them again following their re-isssue. He is the most noble, complex, sympathetic and well-written literary character that I have ever encountered.
