if it's the rear drum brakes getting hot and smelling, could be the shoes are overadjusted and dragging. could be a stuck wheel cylinder or collapsed brake hose keeping pressure on the shoes causing them to drag. the brakes produce alot of heat during normal use so if both wheels are equally hot, may be normal. if 1 wheel is hotter than the other, get your mechanic to check the brakes to see why the one side is staying applied.

A good bet would be a bad flexible hydraulic brake line. When you apply the brakes the brake fluid is forced into the wheel cylinders and the brake shoes are engaged, but if the flexible brake line is plugged the fluid can't return and the brake stays partial engaged.
This will make the drum so hot that you can't touch it.

Brakes sticking. Very dangerous. Brakes in this cond. heats up to around 1600-2000 degrees. One word of warning. If u keep driving this vehicle like this the lug nuts will get soo hot they will SNAP OFF, all 5 lugs will snap off while you're driving. It can be deadly at highway speed. It happened to me once as I approached a stoplight less than a mile from entering the highway. So I was very lucky.

Drum.... on the back... your parking brake was probably on...if it wasn't then the brakes were dragging....and that almost never happens on drum brakes.... make sure your parking brake is off, then drive it and see if it heats up and smells.... if it does you must take the drum off and see what the problem is.

Could be a brake pad dragging and heating it up. Your fuel mileage would be awfully bad, too.
