I guess it is because most of us are paranoid. We're always thinking how others are going to judge us. If you really think about, almost every descision we make is based on what others will think of us. This is human nature. But the truth is, it doesn't matter one bit what people think of you. Just live your life and have fun. Do what you feel is right. Because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

It's how your raised by your parents. Even small statements by parents to a young child such as "You don't want people to think your a slob, do you?" sinks in. If you have a bad day as an adult and wear sweatpants out of the house, (not to go jogging), then you might hear that voice in your head "I wonder if i look like a slob?"
If I have to question myself as to whether I look like a slob, and will wonder the whole time I'm out if people think I'm a slob--I go change. I probably look like one. It's important to be comfortable with what you wear--no matter what it is.

I believe it is because we are in fear that they will say something that may negatively taint how others view us (i.e. spread untrue rumors, etc.) But in reality, you're right...we shouldn't be concerned about the opinions of aquaintances...live life as if no one is watching.
