I was layed off from a job that paid my bills plus extra each month. My job now pays much less. I used my credit cards to help fill in. Now I owe so much on my cards that I am having trouble paying them.

Similar problem recently encountered by someone in my family. One way around the never ending increasing balance is to open a new card (if you can). The new card should be offered with $0 charges and 0% APR on balance transfers for the first 12 months. Then transfer the balance, and pay it off bit by bit, but avoiding the never ending interest.
