I can't comment on poetry without bringing in music - both are such a sensual experience and both bring you back to distant memories with the whisper of words conjuring up memories of fragrances from the garden as you played in the evening, the touch of the sun; the ripple of notes on the piano bringing you back to the rippling brook - in poetry and in reality - and the catch in your throat as you read of the sheer power of emotions or listen to the gradual crescendo of violins and are once again making love with poetry, music and people.

i am an almost poet. i've been writing poetry for 2 years. the reason i write poetry is to release feelings. when i read other's poetry it duzn't make me feel anything. but sometimes when i go back and read my poetry (b/c i wrote it and i know wat it's about) i can take that and say that i'm never gonna go back to that u kno? i wrote a poem about my ex. but instead of wallowing in the poem i was writing to help myself get over him. then i went back and read it the next day i completely put him from my mind. that specific poem made me feel very powerful (not sure y. it wasnt even all that good...)lol. this as u may have already noticed is a pointless answer. very little relates to the question. i could have said it in less words than this. but i chose not to. and i don't know y........

of corse poetry has an effect on our emotions. well, mine anyway. If i read a poem about something unfortunate i will feel sad, unless it was poorly written. If i read something bitter-sweet, it might move me to tears. i only feel bored reading poetry when i have no interest in what i am reading,(usually in school when they force me to read something, or hunt for literary devices.). if you want to truely enjoy poetry, then i suggest allowing it to move you. let the words seep into you, relax in the rythm and sounds of the sylabelles. and think about the words and how they are similar or different than your own experiences.

Read:
for colored girls who have considered suicice when the rainbow is enough.
I forget the author, but I do believe the title has no caps.
Anyhow, this poetic play actually woke me up, little white girl that I am, who has had friends of many different backgrounds.
One of my friends had me read this, and from my own disadvantaged family life (oh, we've all got something in common there, eh?)
I got it.
It moved me.
Everything else, unless the spoken word poetry like on Def Jam,
is pretty much blah.
Head for a jam session,
get inspired!

That's exactly the point of poetry.
By the way, I do think there is a poet living inside you. Take your entry up above...rearrange a few lines, add a little polish, and you've certainly got the start of a poem.

Yes, especially when it expresses my thoughts or emotions well. I'm very fond of Shakespeare's sonnets.
