From a feminist point of view, abuse would consist of being held in low esteem, exploited, continually criticised, demeaned, ignored, taken advantage of, being given no freedom. A woman who is being watched all the time and having to account for everything she does, being prevented from bettering herself and seeking education, or being denied the ability or the possibility to be financially or professionally independent. For a young girl it would be to be forced to marry. All of this would be under moral or psychological abuse of course. There is physical abuse as well such as violence and rape.

Weird application form? What on earth would require that??

But from a social science angle, feminist analysis simply involves using patriarchal based analysis to critique a situation (in the same way, a Marxist analysis would be looking at class structure etc).

Probably Brownmiller would be a good starting point? Not sure as read her work in relation to a different topic.

Whether people agree with it or not feminism is a valid point of analysis within socsci because it offers an alternative view with which to consider aspects of social life.

Hoyle and Sanders wrote a very interesting (non feminist) research paper about UK policing of domestic violence, arguing that it is not a legal issue but a sociological issue.

I would hazard a guess that the application form might be for a college place etc? In which case use google scholar and see what you come up with.

Sounds like you're filling out a VAWA grant form which requires the applicant organisation to accept the feminist analysis of domestic abuse. Basically you have to pander to women in a one-sided fashion so hard it hurts.

Edward C is essentially spot-on. The definition of "abuse" has been expanded so much that a woman can secure a restraining order just because she "feels afraid," without having to actually PROVE he's done anything to warrant her having that feeling. Did you know not too long ago, a woman got a restraining order from David Letterman by complaining that he was controlling her through the TV?

Pretty much sums up the feminist definition of "domestic abuse" in a neat little microcosm.

I read your question and then I read through a few of the answers you'd already received...and am answering to give my 2 cents really......I am not a feminist.....although I did spend too long in an abusive marriage.....and I was in a shelter for abused spouses.....note I said spouses....while I was there we had a male with his two children in the same facility......although I have to say the majority of occupants were female and both male and female children......It saddens me to see that what my children and I went through is belittled by feminism.......During my marriage I was beaten severely.....broken bones......raped at gunpoint by my ex husband....and the shelter and attornies were not there telling me to use this to get custody of my children......they were there so I would have a safe place to be as I was in fear of my life as I had no where else to go....Maybe yours was the wrong answer to write this to .....but I read a few questions yesterday and today.......and while I do not disagree that there are men who are abused by women....and women who take advantage of the system....are we forgetting that there are women who really are subjected to the horrors of the men who apparantly love them and hurt them every day. Also for the record the women that supposedly cry abuse to get full custody of their children.....even with the proof of all he had done to me.....the judge in my case, while seeing that my ex was a threat to me.....thought that he had never directly hurt the kids....so he had the right to see his children unsupervised.....the only stipulation was that he has to pick them up at a facility where I could be protected.....and I was given an order of protection.....

What on earth is this form you are filling in. File it in the waste paper bin. Feminists, are self obsessed man hating harridans. They have done more damage to society than anything else I can think of. Have you noticed a correlation between the increasing influence of women in the workplace and the wheels of power generally, with the increasing levels of social and moral decline in society. The huge numbers of abortions, is a very good example.

Be careful you could get yourself into a messy legal situation.
Feminism can be misleading. You need a legal definition of domestic abuse.Anything thing else is bull.

I am a woman, and not a feminist, but I do not understand why it has to be a feminists' analysis.
