I always used the extra thin strings. Once you build up calusus on your fingers, and are able to bend the strings without hurting your fingers, step it up a notch, and get one size up.

It all depends on what you are doing too.

Good luck!

I've been using Dean Markley for 20 years and have never had any trouble with them.I'm not sure what caused your strings to turn red,but I suggest another set.I prefer a lighter set - starting with .009.Before using Markley,I used Ernie Ball, but I used an even lighter gauge - .008 first string.
Give another try with Dean Markley and write them about your experience, they should make it right and may have an idea as to why you had a problem.

On electric I've recently switched to Elixir .09 - .46 coated. My standby was D'addario .09's

D'addario always prove to have the longer life of better tone.

On acoustic I do always use Elixir coateds, as they seem to have the longest life of good tone and feel for bronze strings. I put 0.11's on my acoustics.
