My History teacher assigned us an essay that had to be about a Black person that lived prior to 1877. Could anyone come up with some topics to write about and if possible, a site with primary sources.

Sojourner Truth comes to mind. Her story is an interesting one, in that she, a former slave in the state of NY, was able to use the court system to free her son, who was sold South so he could not become free when he turned 21, as was the law in NY.

During her lifetime, she sold her biography when she lectured to secure funds. I have had the honor of holding one of those books in my hands. In the 1960s, when I did my research, there was only that book and one other about her; since the blooming of Black History, however, there are many more sources, which I cite below:
