I don't think either "guides" the other. All thought, in particular philosophy is influence by the culture and history and some philosophers have had great influence over our history such as Plato, and Aristotle so they both influence each other.

I suppose you could argue that philosophy guides the study of history as it has a large influence on the theory of history and how historian interpet evidence.
