This guy is homeless, used his Dad's address. Would this make a difference?

YES.

Call 1-800-772-1213 (1-800-SSA-1213) to make your address change.
When you call, be specific about the fact that you have not moved, but want to use a PO Box for mail. Otherwise, the local office will be notified you might have moved, they will call you and ask you about your new address and watse your time.

However, like the others said, Direct Deposit is an even better way to go. And if you are afraid of bouncing checks, just get a savings account (but watch out for fees!).

I would think so. But I would encourage Direct Deposit. A brown envelope has MONEY written all over it and attracts thieves like flies to honey.
