My guitars. My girlfriend, (now wife) once had a wreck and her car caught on fire. The only things she saved were my guitar and the bottoms of her string bikini, my favorite bathing suit she had at the time.

Kids of course but if I was alone and the kids and husband were safe then I would save only three things:
Our external hard drive with all of our family photos on it and my husbands journals from his 2 year mission in Korea and my book in progress manuscript.
I hope to get a fire proof safe for those things soon so hopefully if we ever did have a fire I will only have to worry about my family.

Assuming family and pets were safe I'd grab the photos. You can't replace those. My dear mum has been gone for 10 years and the thought of never even seeing a picture of her again would break my heart.

Well, just assuming my family (including my cat) are all safe already...
I'd save my little toy dog Patchy.
And if I had time, my wallet as well.
Even though that's technically more than one item.

I actually have a hand file that contains stocks and bonds, account information on everything I have open, as well as other important paperwork. I would grab that first, after my kids of course.

Assuming my girlfriend isn't inside, her dog. That little dog means the world to her. If she lost her home and her dog in the same day, I don't think she'd be the same person.

I would hope that everyone's answer would be some family member (if there is one living with them) and next would be pictures/some sort of mementos that can't be replaced.....
