Was the American Revolution a real revolution, such as the French Revolution fought a decade later, or was it merely a rebellion against a foreign power?

It was a revolution in that the United States was throwing of the shackles of monarchy. Otherwise not much changed. The United States continued to do most of its trading with Britain. The French Revolution was a true revolution. They were getting rid of their absolute monarchy and going straight to a republic. The US already had a lot of experience in self-government because they were so far away from the king.

To simply answer your question, I would say it was a rebellion and the French Revolution was a real revolution.

I do not understand how you can state "real, such as the French Revolution"?
A revolution is a successful revolt. The American colonies revolted against the British rule in America and won. Not only did they revolt against British rule but also the crown, and the rule of monarchies that was centuries old. They formed a constitution where the rights of man did not come from king, lord, Parliament, or any form of government known to men but from GOD the creator. So not only was it a revolt against a power, but also a new form of government based upon rights that could not be denied to anyone but by the hand of god. US citizens do not swear an oath of fidelity to a government, a king or dictator or any other ruler, but to the constitution of the United States.

The French Revolution replaced a King with a blood thirsty council of a few men, and then again with an Italian dictator who later declared himself emperor.

It was a rebellion in England against taxes and freedom of religion . It became the American Revolution when England fought here to defeat the English people that had settled here to escape English rule. At that time we were colonies.
They lost and now we are the United States of American separate from English rule.

It was a war of independence, not a true revolution. The British government remained completely intact, after all.
