desktop properties / settings tab
Use the slider to adjust the resolution.

If by chance you managed to corrupt your display driver......you could reinstall with your drivers disc or pull the latest off the manufacturer's website

Depends on what you consider normal. And it also sounds to me like your video card may have failed.

Try right clicking on the desktop and select properties at the bottom of the list. Click the settings tab (should be the last tab) and look for a scroll bar, something like this....

Screen resolution
less | | | | V | | | | more
800 by 600 pixels

Slide the bar towards the more until your at the desired resolution that you want, i assume 1024 by 768 but possibly 1152 by 864.

If you no longer are able to set a resolution that high, or the color quality is very low, then you have a busted video card or bad drivers. go to the manufacturing website and look for new drivers and a guide to install them, if you need it.

Display properties in control panel.

If 800x600 is the max then you need to install the driver of your video card to have more resolutions to choose from.

go to the website of the maker of the video card and download the latest drivers. if that doesnt work then you might have to try playing with the resolution to see what works.

well, where you checked your resolution, you can change the settings. there should be a slider that you can move around. then hit apply.
