Zone alarm is free and it works and so does the Microsoft firewall that comes with XP and if you are going through a router and have enabled 'WPA' there is no way for an intruder to get in. The WPA setting in a router is the most secure block there is and if you use this you don't need to clutter up your computer with all the other software firewalls that actually can be hacked. The WPA setting in your router is not; I repeat; NOT breakable. Just one warning....the router will give you a key (a number) that you install on your computer just once and never again.............DO NOT LOSE that number ...........if you change to an new computer or re-format the present one you'll need that number to get access to the router.

If you have a few bucks, go out and get a router. This will put your machine behind a physical firewall as it strips the info that people use to track you before it sends out your request. If you care not to purchase a router, consider a software firewall such as Zone Alarm. It is the best freeware firewall out there and it practically sets itself up.

You can use a router with a hardwired firewall, Norton's firewall is software. Most routers you buy now have a hardwired firewall, you can pick up one for about $40 and it allows you to have multiple computers connected to your internet connection.

It sounds like you have a firewall since its blocking the intruder. The advice about a router is good, and also check your wireless connection is secured. (I don't know how to do that, I don't have it.)
Make sure you're online in stealth mode;
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.

it looks as if Norton is doing its job perfectly, you dont need any other protection, (as long as you have Norton firewall (worm pervention) included in your Norton package)
