What made you want to give up smoking?

For me I didn't want my grandchildren to see what a bad habit I had. Fortunately none of my children smoke.

I gave up smoking four weeks ago and have not had a single puff - I can't believe that I have managed this as I have tried a couple of times. I am 40 and wanted to stop before I got any older - I only smoked about 10 a day. My motivation was health - the thought of being hooked up to an oxogen tank when I was older put me off more than dying - what a way to spend your life when you should be enjoying your retirement!. Also, I did not want to inflict this on my partner.........

One of the major things that made me want to give up smoking was seeing my uncle coughing with emphesema. It was like he was coughing out decayed pieces of his lungs.

I still feel a little bit disturbed thinking about how terrible his health had gotten after 50 years of smoking. He passed away about two years ago, leaving a wife and child in the Philippines.

I haven't got there yet. It is becoming an ever bigger nuisance between cost and pariah status. But I really enjoy two of my cigarettes every day, the first in the morning and the one after dinner with a coffee. If only I could eliminate the other 18 each day.....
