NO! If you are a U.S. citizen, coming from the U.S. or U.S. territory YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT. People saying otherwise here are wrong. Below is the link to the State Dept. page with this text:

"The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands."

Right now no passport is needed. The Virgin Islands are territories of the United States. What will happen in the future is questionable. You still need your birth certificate to get back in the USA. You still have to show you are a citizen. Why not just get a passport. We also use ours for domestic travel, so much easier.

U.S. citizens don't need a passport to travel to US Virgin Islands. Since it's a territory, you are not considered to have left the US.

tonalc and the State Department link are right.....US Citizens, travelling between mainland US and the VI ( and not stopping in the British Virigns, DR, or the like ) DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT...2 forms of ID are agood thing to have....

now, thats all the US Government wants.....some AIRLINES want you to have a passport so check each carrier individually......and be prepared for ticket clerks who havent gotten the word....print out the State Department advisory and carry it with you...
