Am i right in thinking that america was itself invaded by settlers and pilgrims from the mayflower that left Plymouth Dockyard in Devon one sunny afternoon? i suppose if thats true, then the british also 'invavded' the US, dispossesd the natives, then set up shop themselves as the ruling elite. so looking at the US today, does america count in as well in the question above?

I think your (question?) is misleading. True, the United Kingdom occupied many countries during their colonization times. Invade is not quite accurate. They did leave these countries when colonization became uncool but these countries were not left in chaos. The USA has invaded Germany on two different occasions but they left Germany (at least on the second time) pretty well off. They occupied Japan after WW 2 but you have to admit that Japan is a very successful nation. The USA occupied South Korea for many years and you have to admit that South Korea is pretty successful today. The USA occupied South Vietnam and they were forced out before they could defeat the communists from the north and there was a massacre of thousands and thousands of the South Vietnamese that were allies of the USA. The "loony left" such as Jane Fonda were mostly responsible for that. That brings us to Iraq. Which way is that country going to go. Will the USA have a chance to get Iraq on its feet or will the Pelosis, Kennedys, Fondas, and other radical left wingers force us out before we are successful and will there be other massacres of major numbers of people?

In 1897, Queen Victoria ruled over a quarter of the world's population and a fifth of its territory, all connected by the latest marvel of British technology, the telegraph, and patrolled by the Royal Navy, which was larger than the next two navies put together. "The world took note," says the historian Karl Meyer. The New York Times gushed: "We are a part ... of the Greater Britain which seems so plainly destined to dominate this planet'."

Now the US has taken their place and is making some of the same mistakes...one has to wonder

Lets look at the real facts.

Australia
USA
Canada
South Africa
Hong Kong
New Zealand

All these nations are stupidly wealthy and were all under the command of the King/Queen of Great Britain and there people were subjects to the crown. I dont think it would be the case had they gone on there own. Only the Islamic countries are in bad ways and that is totally there fault and nothing to do with Britain. We brought the oppertunity of modernisation and democrocy.

Now when has the US done the same as successfully as that?

Exploitation was king during the colonization of Africa and Asia by European powers during the 18th and 19th centuries. It's not simply enough to blame the UK for this position. Many of the modern day European countries had colonies that they exploited in Africa and Asia, as well.

At least we had sense enough to stay out of Kashmir and Northern Ireland. Who the hell said we had to go to Iraq?

Your history's a little sketchy, by the way.

First of all, GB DID NOT INVADE Ireland.. UK troops were in NORTHERN Ireland - which is still PART of UK aka Great Britain - so you can cross that one off your list !

With regard to the original question - check out -
http://books.google.co.uk/books?q=how+many+countries+have+Great+Britain+invaded%3F&ots=lN5vKrPLle&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title

Now, go figure !!

It would be good to see where you found your facts... c'mon add some links so we can check them out - for the balance of fairness...

Are you really saying that GB aka UK really invaded Iraq then leave it in chaos for the United States to deal with???

We have invaded NO countries and left them in chaos for US to deal with... but, I'm willing to be proved wrong with links to FACTS... for sure the ones you have listed above don't figure in your question !!
