Mark Messier is not just a goon, He also is one of the all time assist leaders as well as one of the all time goal scoring leaders, he has captained 2 teams to the stanly cup, something no one else has ever done, Gretzky would not have had near the career he had without Messir by his side and then after gretzky was gone Messier went on to win a couple more cups, something the great one did not do without messier....does he deserve a street named after him, the guy deserves a monument much larger than a street

I am a HUGE Ranger fan, but the Messier legend is an overblown myth that keeps growing, perpetuated by the giddy media and fawning fans.
He guaranteed victory against the Devils, but Kovalev was the one that took charge of the game, started the comeback and set up Mess with his 1st two goals. Mess did knock down the empty netter, though.
The Cup winning goal delivering us from a 54 year drought? Adam Graves scored that goal. Messier got credit for it and Graves had too much class, selflessness and admiration for Messier to say otherwise.
Most importantly, Messier bagged on the Rangers after pouting when Gretzky showed up and took away some of his spotlight. He stole millions from the Canucks for three years, bringing the team nothing but grief and choas. During that time, the Rangers had no viable 2nd line center due to Messier's departure, went nowhere and ultimately ended Gretzky's career.
Lastly, he came back to NY after Gretzky retired, only to take away icetime from the youngsters, deliver no post-season appearances and create a rift in a room of high-profile players.
He lived on the '94 run for a decade and now thinks he should be made GM of the squad. Are you kidding me??
Best leader of all time? Please, that honor belongs to Yzerman. You could argue whether Messier even makes the top 5 names on that list. I say they name a whole block after this guy as long as we can stop referring to him as "THE CAPTAIN".

I hate the Rangers with a passion (Devils fan) but I have nothing against Messier. Having a street named after him does nothing but promote the NHL. Also, Messier wasn't an overpaid goon. He has enough Stanley Cup rings to plug every orifice on your body.

No it isn't. If it wasn't for him, Ranger fans would still hear chants of 1940 at the Garden. He did a lot for the Rangers and he deserves the honor. He is the greatest captain in NHL history. He guaranteed victory, then he scored the Stanley Cup winning goal. That is a captain right there. Messier is also the greatest Ranger ever.

Goon = Donald Brashear.
Leader= Mark Messier
Obviously, you have your definitions confused. Still confused? Look up videos on Brashear and you'll see what a Goon is.

He wasn't a goon. What are you jealous that you can't get a street named after you? Considering that they name streets after athletes I think he deserves it.

There are streets in Winnipeg named after people that no one even knows who they are - why not Messier?

I have no problem with such a street in New York. If it were in Edmonton, there should also be streets named after Wayne Gretzky and Grant Fuhr. I can't imagine a street being named after him anywhere else.
