Old Navy was named after a bar in Paris. See the source below - directly from the Gap Inc website (unfortunately the site does not offer any further details on how or why the name was picked).
Old Navy was created as a division of Gap Inc (the parent company of Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Forth and Towne, and Piperlime).

The name "Old Navy" was chosen from because originally the stores were supposed to imitate the look and feel of a traditional military surplus store. While this motif was quickly dropped, many stores retain a warehouse-like/urban decor and the name stuck.

I guess they chose "Old Navy" because it sounds better than "Old Air Force", or "Old Coast Guard" etc.

maybe it dates back to an old navy seal wanting to be an entrepaneur or something. Maybe the owner was just really old and liked the color navy!! maybe he just didnt want to call it navy beans which is what the company originally sold.

Not sure why this is philosophy, but I always assumed it was something to do with rum. But then that's my answer to everything.
