It would help if you told us what you already know or which are your fave bands, so we'd know what similar bands to recommend.
I suggest you not to listen to this nowadays commercial nu-metal or metal-core crap, it's all fabricated anyway.
Look into some real true heavy metal stuff, like Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, Grave Digger, Dream Evil, Running Wild...
For a taste of melodic death metal: Insomnium, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, Noumena...

depends on how heavy u want.... metalcore and death metal are extremely diff. but here are some of my personal faves from each genre:
metalcore-all that remains, killswitch engage, shadows fall, atreyu
metal-children of bodom, chimaira, mastodon, machine head, lamb of god
and some others i dunno exactly which genre they fit into...
opeth, mushroomhead, trivium, unearth
and some oldies but goodies- metallica (pre-St. Anger), judas priest, slayer, iron maiden and of course... led zeppelin
