While an occasional drink is usually fine for a breastfeeding mother, regular alcohol consumption raises the risk of alchol being passed along to the child. Also, if she is regularly impaired, she will not be in the best position for handling an emergency if one should arise.

It's not so much an issue that she is drinking alcohol, but rather how long after she has stopped drinking does she nurse her baby. And I'm going to assume she isnt nursing her 18mth old very often. While most are ignorant on the facts about drinking alcohol and nursing, and may say something like 'a nursing mother cant drink' I became a little more educated and found out how long it takes for the alcohol to leave your bloodstream. You can find charts online that give you a good idea of how long to wait before breastfeeding based on your age and weight. The general guideline is 2hrs for each drink of 'avg' strength, so obviously a long island ice-tea will need longer to be out of your system!
What are medical problems associated with this? Certainly not fetal alcohol syndrome as someone suggested on your other posting of the same ?. An impaired motor development I know is one concern. I dont know what other issues there might be.
Read the following article to give you a bit more 'solid' info on this issue. I wish I knew who you are talking about... is this someone you can share the info you learned with? I suppose the good thing about heavy alcohol intake is that it reduces your milk supply, so it's natures way of helping to eliminate the problem!

A mother who breastfeed her baby shouldn't consume any medicine, except doctor gives her a prescription, either drinking alcohol. The alcohol can affect the milk quality, it can reduce the quantity too. So persuade her to stop what she's doing!

A little bit is OK. Drinking a lot is not. Check out what Le Leche League has to say about it.

i just went to about.com
and went under alcohol and breastfeeding
it can be passed to the baby while it is in the blood stream
once the mothers body absorbs the alcohol it is no longer in the milk.
