Well, if we just used first names, many of us would have the same user name, which would get confusing ...
My real (full) name is the same as a famous actress. I don't use it because I don't want people to think I'm some crazy person pretending to be a famous actress. Or for crazy people to think I actually am the actress, and start stalking me.
