My son is 3 weeks old and he only wakes up every 4 - 5 hours for feeding. He would eat 3 - 4, 5 oz. He is gaining weight, but I am still curious - shall I wake him up so he would eat more often or it is fine to wait for him to tell me when he is hungry?

By the way, he is breastfed during the day and fed with breastmilf from the bottle at night.

The reason I am concerned is because nurses in the hospital where he was born told me he HAS to eat every 2 - 3 hours for the first 6 weeks. I assumed that if he is gaining weight it should be fine, but just wanted to make sure.

If he is gaining weight and wetting enough nappies then leave him sleep. My daughter was like this from birth. The nurses at the hospital freaked out as she didnt wake up for 6 hours. But she was fine, she slept for ages and then would wake up and have her feed and go back to sleep.
As your breastfeeding the baby will tell you when he is hungry. Babies only have 3 functions at this stage, eat, sleep and poop. And he knows how to do it and when he is hungry so just listen to your baby.

If your son has frequent wet nappies and is quite happy everything sounds fine. But dont let a new baby go for more than 6 hours without a feed.

If he's gaining weight then NO don't wake him. He will get into the habit of waking then even when there's no need. Leave him sleep, it's more important, when he's hungry he'll let you know!

I was told that after they regained their initial birth weight, then it wasn't necessary to keep waking them up. And that takes only a couple of weeks - definately not 6.

No u dont need to wake him, babies sleep when they want to and will wake themselves when they are hungry, as long as ur happy with his growth I'd say let him keep this routine and try n nab somemore rest for urself. Congrats :)

I would let him sleep (so you can sleep too) especially if he is gaining weight at a normal rate. You might want to ask your doctor. I figure that if he wants to eat then he will let you know.

If he is a healthy 'normal' baby, let him be! When he is hungry he will let you know. You need your rest too.....a rested mommy can take care of her baby much better. Hopefully you got lucky and have a baby who will get on a good sleeping schedule early. Best of luck to you!
