We, the Europeans, talk alot and are proud of the European values. I especially would like to discuss here with you today one of them - tolerance. When and where did it start? Did it originate in the US first, and only then was "exported" to Europe, or is it vice versa?
When I speak about tolerance, I especially mean tolerance towards gay people, and I would like you to discuss my question in that context.

The tolerance is for sure a European value because Europe was built from 50 years of compromise between different Great nations. I think it started at that time, when we really started thinking about Europe (Rome Treaty, 1957) and not only our Nation-state.

Regarding specific tolerance towards gays, I think all European countries are not yet very open. Even if progress had been really effective since 10 years, there are a lot of hurdles. Main progressive countries are in Scandinavia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

I do not think it originates in the US first as political recognition of gay status is limited while a lot of European countries are nowadays changing their legislation towards gays weddings and children adoptions.
