I would have to agree that Ed Reed is one of the best defensive players in the NFL right now.

The best player currently has to Jason Taylor with his speed and size he is any Qbs nightmare as for teh Past u gotta go with Mean Joe Green or Jack Lambert who terrorized NFL offenses while apart of the Steel Curtain of the 70's. O by the way Troy Polamau is not horrible and he is defenently just as good as Ed Reed. Reed just gets more recognition because he plays with Ray Lewis. Polamalu has coverage skills of a DB and can read a QB all the time so get your facts straight before you start bashing people OK

Clearly you are on drugs and delusional. I am not going to put down Reed, but to say Troy is "horrible" shows that you are biased against the Steelers or delusional. So you don't want an HONEST answer. You only want an answer if it agrees with you. Now if you want a best past then I think Rod Woodson should clearly be on the list. How can you argue with a player who made the 75th year anniversary team of the NFL when he was STILL ACTIVE.

Are you serious? Past defensive greats without mentioning Lawrence Taylor? Whatever he has done off field and in his retirement is not what he was on the field, ask Joe Theisman. L.T. was a monster at linebacker and revolutionized that position in his day for the linebacker blitz. Present defensive player, Dwight Freeney is underrated because of his size ,but has proven to be a great defensive end and got him a Super Bowl ring to prove it.

You don't want my answer for best current defensive player, but Ed Reed and Brian Urlacher share the #2 spot on my list.
As for past, Ronnie Lott, Rod Woodson, Lawrence Taylor, and Derrick Thomas all tie for the top spot. They each have their merits, and it's nearly impossible to make an unbiased selection of one over the other three.

well u have brian urlacher whos posted good stats every year and once he gets his hands on u, u wont get away, he also is pretty fast for his size, then theres champ baily who is jus ultimate at coverage, to decide it might have to be a more specific question. which is better an interception or 10 tackles, obv interceptioon because that stops the play dead but what about on the plays were ur not gettin the intercpetion , thats were the tackles come in and both prove valuable, ed reed gets both so he could be in the run for best defender

You reall could be greater particular, as each and each shielding line is diverse than the others. How do you study Suh as a DB to Willis as a LB or Revis as a CB? you quite can not; even comparing protection's to cornerbacks isn't a honest assessment. regardless of the undeniable fact that, most of the precise shielding gamers would be: Suh, DB Patrick Willis, LB Revis, DB Mario Williams DB/LB Jared Allen, DB those are most of the precise gamers of their positions; there are various, many others, and a greater valuable checklist would be one executed by ability of place.

Since you asked current and past. Ronnie Lott is better then anyone in this arguement so far about the safety. As for Linebacker it is Urlacher. Thomas is good, Urlacher is better hands down.

Past player would have to be Dick Butkus because he is one of the hardest hitting football players of all time and the most feared. Current player would have to be Derrick Brooks because he is a smart linebaker who always finds the ball.
