Yes you can. If data on your hard disk is corrupted it is advisable to format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system (usually Windows XP). If a new hard disk is used, you may prefer to partition the hard disk into 2 or more drive. The operating system is installed on the first drive and a backup of the data is stored on the second drive More details at http://fixit.in/format.html

that is probably the most stupid thing ive heard today. but dont worry its not the worst.

buying a HD from a flea market, youve got to be the most trusting person ive met. even the slightest mishandling of these fragile drives can cause it to not work.

but yes you would be able to reformat it. if it has the os and you have it set to be a slave, then you will have to get a 3rd party program or possible the windows cd to format the HD, or erase the content. I use wipe drive to erase ALL files on a HD.

but in all seriousness....go to tigerdirect.com or something and get a 320GB Hard drive for $80

Competent forensic police can go back for upto about 7 layers of magnetic storage. The CIA can go upto 14 layers. You need to initially wipe any new drive at least 14 times. FREE, automatic program on a floppy wipes 35 times, or 3 times as you specify in the download. Source #1 Other URLs? Thought you'd never ask! All Open Source, so you can see the actual code, and see that it is simply as 'advertised'. Always specify 'erase' in the search word. "erase hard drive" got #2

As long as it works, and the technology isn't too new or too old for your computer. As a rule of thumb if it is within 1/10 and 2 times the size of the drive you have, you will probably be alright. You ought to know if your machine supports scsi, ide/eide, ata/sata drives before you make a purchase.

It is possible that there are no jumpers in the jumper slots to set master/slave/cs. In this case you would have to leave it as master or make yourself a home-made jumper.

Maybe. Keep in mind you are buying it from a flea market, and I doubt the seller will provide a warranty. Most likely, the drive is dead, failing or smaller than the seller claims.

It could be formatted, but you should use FDISK first to elimnate (reduce?) the chance of viruses left (unintentionally) by the previous owner. FDISK will overwrite nearly any operating system, though a few need another program to overwrite the boot sector.

Hard drives are very fragile. Get a new one that you can afford. Check the flyers for electronic and computer stores
