I think they do because my dog seems to use it to the best of his ability to get whatever he wants.

Some do. I mean, my dog is super-naughty, but she knows she's funny, so when she doesn't get in trouble (even though she knows she's wrong), she knows it's because she's cute.
But I think most aren't fully aware of how cute they are. They'd be completely intolerable if they were cute AND vain! The fact that they're not aware of their cuteness makes them even cuter!
