Check out http://www.pscode.com for great sample codes. You want a component called ADO.NET, which is an adaptor that connects a VB.NET program to a databsae back end. ADO stands for "ActiveX Data Objects".

Microsoft has some decent online video tutorials. Check out lesson 8 for connecting to a Sql database.
