Well for starters, that is not a compliment. When a guy calls a girl frumpy, he is saying she looks sloppy, messy, frumpy, dumpy and any other "umpy's" that come to mind to describe someone who is not taking good care of their appearance. If a person's hair is at least styled, whether by putting in a ponytail, curling or simply brushing, when teeth are brushed, when jeans and a flattering t-shirt or other top (instead of baggy sweats and t-shirt) are worn, then a person doesn't look frumpy. When it looks like a person just got up and threw on the first thing they found, if they are not selective in what they choose to wear, then they can appear frumpy.

I'd much rather be the one that was told they were frumpy then the rude one that said it. You can go buy new clothes and put make up on. Done. No more being frumpy. But they have to work on their rude personality. Thats much harder to take care of. How does he dress by the way? Good luck

It really could be as simple as buying clothes than fit. Accent good features instead of hiding everything because you have a couple bad one's. I use to be self-conscious about some parts of my figure and would wear baggier clothes. Then I realized when I started wearing clothes that fit better... everyone asked if I lost weight. Pull your hair out of your face, wear clothes that fit - get contacts instead of glasses and smile a lot. Simply put - it goes a LONG way.

frumpy means ... sort of ... well ... "an unattractive woman who wears dowdy-old fashioned clothing" ... but it also is just ... short, kind of ungraceful and out of proportion in funky ways ... it's a bad thing.

You aren't taking care of your appearance.

Walk around with a housecoat on all day, no makeup, blah hairdo, spending too much time eating bon-bons?

It means you dress in a way that is not sharp - you dress like you are going to a yoga work out.
