I have a 55gal saltwater tank w/2 true percula clowns and 1 volital lionfish. We want to start getting coral. We have the normal lighting that came with the kit. 2 All-glass 24" Fluorescent bulbs (120volt, 19watt, 60hz). Will we need to change the whole hood, or can we just change the bulbs?

My question is how much wattage do I need in order to keep corals? Plants are not corals. Anenomes and stuff. My hood's limit is 19 watts.

The person has stated it is a SALT WATER TANK and they wan't to get LIVE CORALS.
depending on how deep the water is, is what is going to determine the correct lighting for Corals.
It also depends on what TYPE of corals you are going to purchase, LPS, SPS, Soft corals...
Some need very little light to survive, most need a lot of light and some need very intense lighting such as Metal Halide to survive.
Normal T12 Fluorescent bulbs that come with most Aquarium Kits will NOT due.
I'm Guessing that your 55 gal. is around 21 inches deep???
4 X T5 Flourescent bulbs 2 actinic blue and 2 bright white or a couple of high output Compact Flourescents will due for most LPS (large polyp stony) and soft corals.
If you do not wan't to limit which corals you can buy, go with Metal Halides at 250w (1 or 2)depending on the leingth of your tank.
Remember that MOST corals NEED light to GROW and SURVIVE.

Change the bulbs... live plants make an important factor in choosing lights...

Read the sockets on the hood and see what the max wattage is...if the lighting you need is less then or equal to the max then you are fine...

light are dark one all you need is to figure the volt and the watt ,hz on the fish tank. Or you can just go to the shop you bought it at and ask them . But if you live in Texas are something and you bought it in Ohio then just go to the nearest fish shop are go to a walmart are something and ask them.

You can just buy new bulbs and change them. The lighting you have should be fine.

you ought to get a double bulb!? One white for specific to help plant life and its extra organic and one novelty coloration like blue crimson or crimson! shop searching around you will discover some thing on your style!! :)
