Here's a "decorative" suggestion: Bettas breathe at the water's surface, so you can't have the top of the "vase" completely closed. But I agree, this would make an interesting centerpiece.
What you could do is use glass marbles (these come in lots of colors, so choose one you like). Put the dish you will be using as a candle holder on the vase and mark where it sits. Flip the vase over and glue more marbles to the bottom of the dish so that it raises the dish a little above the top of the vase. Fish gets air, and the marbles make the centerpiece decorative (and the vase and dish pieces match). You could even scatter extra marbles around the base of the candle!

Unlike most fish a betta gets oxygen by taking air from the surface of the water. A closed lid isn't bad if it's not air tight. In fact given bettas tendency to jump a lid is a good idea.

heres a great idea -- give your betta 2 homes -- a happy home of a couple gallons and your center piece for when you are entertaining. he can have a closed environment for a while depending on how much air space you leave in the top of the vase. the air would refresh every time you feed him and change the water so it wouldn't be that big of a deal. just make sure he is a happy pet and not part of the furniture.

it's not "beta" it is a fish, not a greek letter. the correct spelling it beTTa. and is pronounced "bet-tah"
vases are not suitable for bettas. fish are NOT decorations. they have feeling just like any other living thing. the feeling living in a vase would basically be limited to pain(poor water quality), cramped(vases are TOO SMALL), cold(they are TROPICAL fish adn need heaters so hte temp stays around 80°F), and eventually suffocation if you kept a thing on top of the container.
what are you going to do with the fish after you tire of using it as a centerpiece? animals, no matter how small, still are living things and should not be treated like objects or decorations.
INSTEAD why not try something like glass fish in a bowl? they sell them all over the place (especially at the beach) and come on strings or things to make them float at different levels. then no animal is in danger.

I would leave the candle a little off the side because the water still needs a little oxygen, if you look at the beta made fish tanks u notice little holes for oxygen. so yeah good question.

Beta fish need oxygen to survive. They do not get it from the water like most fish but breath from the top of the cantainer. If you put a lit on it there won't be enough oxygen for it to survive. See if there is someway you can put the top on but allow air to flow in and out.
They are a cheap fish and if you loose this one because of not enough oxygen, you can get another on but don't seal the top.

As long as the environment isn't sealed (like a closed jar). Just maintain regular water changes and he will be fine.

Your fish will be fine as long as you still do it's regular water changes. Mainly the oxygen that it gets will be from the water.
