I have vinca mixed with spring flowering bulbs and violets. It looks super and is maintenance free, except watering.

The best thing is mulch! You can plant native woodland plants there for added beauty! Reduce the amount of grass. Wood chip mulch will help inhance the fungal organisms that the tree needs.
Do what would normally occur in the woods !
Its the best for the environment!
