Is there anything black in there?

Black dyes aren't that. If you wish to test it, get a black pen and draw a thick line on a piece f paper and stick it in the water so that the water reaches just below the line. As it absorbs, the black ink will break down.

It's actually a mixture of other colours like blue, red and yellow. The colours of the lint are most likely parts of any dyes that have faded after beig in the wash.

How funny, I'd never thought about it, but you're right. A sort of purply-grey colour. I've just today cleaned my filter and I chucked all the fluff onto the garden - some of it has already been taken by birds to line their nests. It'll be nice and cosy!

it is not ALWAYS purple. When i do an all pink/red load it comes out pink.
Anyway the rule of color is that all colors mixed together equal black. So purple is dark and pretty close to black. You know when you have an old black marker and it starts to look blueish/ purpleish. Think of lint that way. All the colors are mixing together are making black or a close relative to black purple/blue.
