Jack the Ripper. There is a ton of documentation on him, yet no one ever caught him. He was highly publicized, so this would be a perfect, easy to write paper on an unsolved mystery.

The mystery of how Stonehenge was built, and what it was really used for. There are too many theories out there to speak of, but research at your public library for accepted historical facts about Stonehenge. Then, supplement with current news stories about the latest discoveries there. There were a bunch of articles recently about some new structures discovered in the Stonehenge area thought to be related to Stonehenge.

If you want to do something in the realm of urban legend, you can consider "military" legend. The Philadelphia Experiment , in which it was claimed the United States destroyer USS Eldridge, in 1943, used a generator based on the unified field theory to render it invisible. While the story has mostly been debunked, it is fascinating because some parts of the story are true, like partial invisibility was achieved.

Lastly, if you want to try a research paper that goes deep into little-researched history, then research the mystery of the ancient Europeans found buried in China. They are thousands of years old, and it is quite a mystery.

Good luck researching these unsolved mysteries!!!

Crop circles. If you don't have any luck figuring out who made them, at least you'll have fun looking at the pics of them. You can also talk about how many ancient civilizations had earthwork art things that are only visible from the air, like the Uffington Horse, the Kerne Giant, that big snake with an egg in its mouth in Ohio, the Nazca lines in Peru...lots of options.

Or maybe something with the Nazis. You could talk about how they just now opened all those archives that had a ton of history about Nazi victims (is it in Germany? Poland? I don't even remember.) But it would be a good point that though you may not know now, since they opened the archives, somebody may be able to figure out a lot of stuff about Nazi victims.

This sounds fun! I'd love to write something like this for a grade!

As far as urban legends, see if you can find The Field Guide to North American Monsters. GRRRRREAT urban legends, supernatural stories, Fortean studies, Native American stuff...very entertaining!

Have fun!

In 1930, a NY Supreme Court judge disappeared. Judge Crater's mystery has never been solved and this case captured the imagination of a generation. It even entered everyday language. A question that could be answered with an "I don't know" was met with "And what happened to Judge Crater?"

I've provided you with one link but there are several good ones. http://www.prairieghosts.com/crater.html

how bout cryptozoology? all those animals/monsters that r supposed to be lurking out there... such as nessie, bigfoot, the chupacabra, the jersey devil. u could tie in how each animal seems to only inhabit a particular region/place, and also tie in the cultures that it affects.
