Spears arrived unannounced at a Los Angeles hair salon demanding staff shave off her long brunette locks.
When staff refused, the singer grabbed electric shears and shaved her head, declaring she was doing it because she was fed up with being touched by other people.
Emily Wynne-Hughes, a worker at Esther's Salon, said Spears was crying and agitated when she entered after closing time, demanding they shave her head.
"She wasn't making sense at all - she was very scatterbrained," she said.
"Esther has been in the business for 30 years and said, 'I'm not doing that', but Britney was set on having her head shaved so she started doing it herself."
Ms Wynne-Hughes said when she asked the upset singer why she was shaving her head, Spears gave a bizarre answer.
"She said 'I don't want anyone touching me - I'm tired of everybody touching me'," she said.
"After she left the shop we all just looked around and said to each other, 'We just saw a huge celebrity on the verge of a nervous breakdown'."
The fallen chart star then went to the nearby Body and Soul tattoo parlour where she got two tattoos - a black, white and pink cross on her lower hip and Photographers said the 25-year-old wept in her car before going inside, sitting in front of a mirror and shaving her head with a pair of clippers.
Last month, her manager, Larry Rudolph, said Spears realised her behaviour had been harming her image.
"She understands what's going on right now, and she calls it her 'rocky moment'," he said.

The whereabouts of the hair was a mystery, although an enterprising person in Pennsylvania was selling 10 lots of the purported locks on eBay at $50 per lot.

Personally I think this is a cry for help . . . she is recently divorced and has 2 kids ! And a rumoured second on the way . . .

Because her own hair was only a few centimeters long and in shocking condition. Her hair extensions have been getting thicker and tighter to hide the fact that her locks were vanishing.

That can only go on for so long... think about the recent pap pictures of her with Barbie extensions and wisps of short hair sticking up all around her crown. The real hair was breaking off bit by bit thanks to all the fake crap glued on.

My only questions is, why didn't she get brave and do it sooner? Like before all those Las Vegas and Paris/Lindsay Party Nights.

Don't despair. This will be the act that saves Britney's hair. The stuff she had before was totally ready for the scrap heap.

she shaved her head for that crazy publicity we all are looking for. She did something extreme and now we all are in shock. We don't need to be, it's just Britney. I think she was pissed about all the stuff about Kevin that she wanted the attention on a different part of her.

It's because she needs all the attention she can get. Look right now, we are giving her the utmost attention by asking,talking, and gossiping about her. After what happened to her and Kevin F, she does not know what to do with her kids. So maybe if she has all the attention she can get, they can focus on her and how to try to help her kids. As for Kevin, he used Britney for the money and now, Britney is almost left with nothing.

My theory is she did it to draw attention away from the fact that she only spent approx one day in rehab before giving up. If she hadn't shaved her head that would be the celebrity gossip going around...not necessarily that she left...but that she was in rehab at all. Sure people are talking about it, but most are blown away by the shock of her shaving her head, so it's not the scandel it would have been.

Well she let the world know that she shaves her goochie, so maybe she got bored, & ran out of places to shave so off came the locks.

All kiddding aside, I heard that she went into a rather severe drug, & alcohol treatment programme. Maybe she had to shave her head as part of the treatment.

If that isn't the reason, then she's just plain nuts.

for publicity. she is doing anything under the sun to stay in the tabloids becuz she's tryin to revamp her fading career. i was actually a britney fan but every since she got wit kevin i just wasnt feelin her style no more. its like she became some trailer trash with two kids and a baby daddy. thats not superstar status she on. she on some other type stuff.

I think she shaved it to get rid of the evidence of any drugs in her hair for her custody case. When You do any dugs it will always show up in your hair. Even if it's out of your system. I have a son with my ex and my lawyer told me about it and we made him Take that test. They way it works is they take a big chunk out of your hair, and they can go back to as long as the hair has been on your head. And tell you what drugs and how long ago they were done. Cool huh? So that's why I think she shaved it. GOOD IDEA BRITNEY!!!! IN MY OPINION SHE WAS ALSO TRYING TO SHOW K-FED WHAT SHE WAS DOING AS WELL. I mean they do have a custody battle going on. And only going by thr rumors of drug use, If any. This would be a big strike against her in court, but with no actual evidence of drug use.(IN HER HAIR). They can't use that against her. It's really easy for K-fed to shave his hair bald cuz he's a guy! So he can keep shaving the mowy wowy right out of his hair.
