You lose points by asking questions, but when you ask questions you gain more. You also get more points when your answer is chosen as the best one.

Because you don't know the answer so you have to find it out so it's not free. You get points by helping people (answering) so it all makes sense. You do have a bit of a point about it not existing if peple didn't ask questions though.

Asking questions takes off 5 points from your total it is the same for everyone. By answering questions you get 1 points and for getting a best answer you get 10 points.

Asking questions costs 5 points each, but if you select a Best Answer for your question then you will get 3 points returned to you. Answer questions for 2 points each and vote on undecided questions to earn more points.
