B/c it would cost us more money on basic needs and most Americians aren't willing to pay a bit more for something that's organic or environmentally friendly (aka "green"). Until the consumers change, big business isn't going to make any drastic measures. As it is, they are given tax breaks and additional money for running a green business and following ISO 1400 or higher guidelines, but usually these businesses do only what they have to to get by w/ what the law says-- unless there is money to do it. Basically, they aren't gonna do it out of the goodness of their heart.

Stop? Just, mmmm, stop? My, that would be interesting. Have you yourself considered suicide so that you and your burden on the earth will stop producing CO2?

Facts? Can you cite a source for that number?

Are those metric tonnes (1,000 x 2.2 lbs) or short (American) tons (2,000 lbs)?

I show, from the IMF and UN, a US total of 5.8 billion metric tonnes.

World24126416
United States5872278
European Union3682755
People's Republic of China 13513103
Russia1432513
India1220926
Japan1203535
Germany804701
United Kingdom543633
Canada517157

Interestingly enough, a better way to look at it is how much CO2 is being produced versus much benefit is being produced (as measured by GDP).

Using that, the big losers (biggest polluters per GDP) are places like these:
Uzbekistan
Ukraine
Trinidad and Tobago
Kazakhstan
Azerbaijan
Turkmenistan
Belarus
Syria
People's Republic of China 1
Russia

And the biggest winners are:
Switzerland
Sweden
Iceland
France
Denmark
Belgium
Norway
Austria
Hong Kong
Republic of Ireland

The US is at #40, well above the world median for pollution caused per dollar of value generated.

Inertia... (they are used to doing it)
Selfishness (the cost of change is financially and socially unappealing)
Formerly, ignorance (like smoking, for a good while it was not realised how much harm it was doing)

Person for person, averaged, US citizens have the biggest impact on the planet. On their level of consumption, and their level of waste output.

As soon as you stop consuming plastic products and other manufactured items, the US will stop making them.
