What you feed really depends on you. I feed complete feeds to all my yearlings- I use Nutrena SafeChoice or Purina Strategy. You should feed 1/2 lb for every 100 lbs of your horses body weight at each feeding. You should also be feeding horse quality hay- you can administer it by how many flakes a day or give them free choice hay. Also make sure that your horse has salt and mineral blocks along with loose form of each next to a fresh supply of water.

Hope this helps.

First of all, congratulations on the Friesian! I am so envious (my dream to have one). I feed a grass alfalfa mix, with the amounts based on their body weight. Pure alfalfa can cause laminitis problems as well as colic etc. A good mixed hay, grass mix, or rye mix, is a good choice. In a previous answer the person gave the weight ratio of the hay so I won't restate that part of the formula. I do not buy processed feeds though, rather I feed crimped oats which in the winter I steam open and in the summer I leave dry. And I always have a mineral block for them to lick whenever they choose.

I also feed a complete vitamin formula to help ensure healthy bone and hoof growth. I like farriers formula, but there are several. Don't get sucked into buying a ton of supplements. Rather get one that is complete and stick to it rather than switching around. You can cause alot of damage by over feeding supplements.

Congrats and have fun!

What you need to do is talk to your vet. They will examine the yearling, and determine what kind of diet he/she needs to be on. This will depend on the size, where you live, and what the horse will be doing in the present and near future. This is the safest way to decide on horse feeds. We feed my almost 9 yr old american quarter horse mare a ratio of 2:1 oats:cracked corn. We feed the same to my 21 month old appendix QH gelding. Our vet recommended it, as well as the owner we bought our gelding from. Like I said, it all depends on the horse. Good Luck!
