In order to enter the olympics you must be the best in the country. Only amature althletes can entre the olympics and they therefore so not get paid. The way that these athletes 'get paid' is through sponsorships and some even work with companies that support athletes such as McDonalds and Home Depot/Reno Depot. Most athletes who compete at the olympics are nationally carded meaning that they are competing at a national level. The governement supports these nationally carded athletes by giving them money to help them along with their lives and these athletes can choose how to spend this money. Most nationally carded athletes I know spend it on rent or coaching. For some athletes they also recieve money after winning some competitions such as world cups or championships.

Each countries selection processes are governed by that particular Sports governing body. Most athletes are then taken in the top 3 at an Olympic Team Trials if having achieved the Olympic qualifying standard-
*Track & field* for instance which I know about is like this.

"an athlete must have achieved a qualifying mark established by... in a national or international meet which is sanctioned or recognized by either Track & field Assoc or the IAAF and is conducted under the rules of same. Such a qualifying mark must be achieved during a time period prescribed by the Men's and Women's Track & Field Committees.

Procedures by which athletes will be selected for nomination to the team.

IAAF Requirements:
(Country...Canada)... is allowed to enter up to 3 athletes per event provided they have all met the IAAF "A" qualifying standard. This standard must be met between .....(date) (The top 20 finishers in the IAAF World Championships in Athletics marathon event are considered to be "A" qualifiers)
The.... may enter only 1 athlete per event if she/he has met the IAAF "B" qualifying standard. This standard must be met between ......
The .... must submit no more than four athletes by name on ......in each individual event. For relays, an additional three athletes may be nominated for the 4x100m and another three additional athletes for the 4x400m (see Section II). Only these athletes may subsequently be entered into the competition and thereby become official Olympic Team nominees, based upon the qualifying standards met by these individual athletes by the qualification deadline.

And no you do not get "paid". You are considered amateurs, most are paid by their sponsors in trust, the Olympic games or Olympic committee themselves do not pay you.

Be an exceptional athlete, compete in national competitions and win, and you'll be approached to compete for a spot in the Olympic team for whatever sport you are in. Olympic athletes are paid.
